An Integrated Care Approach to Physical Activity in Patient Treatment

IntegratedCare_OHWC

Jammie Hopkins, DrPH, MS

Webinar Overview:
This webinar explores how physical activity assessment, prescription, and linkage to community resources may be integrated into primary care and specialty medical practice.

Exercise and obligatory physical activity are crucial components to holistic wellness. A strong evidence base suggests physical activity is associated with reduced risk of developing preventable health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, arthritis, cancer, stroke, diabetes, depression, and anxiety disorders. Further, physical activity has been utilized as a treatment modality to improve quality of life and mitigate the deleterious impacts of chronic conditions. Despite these favorable health claims, levels of physical activity remain dismally low in the US, especially among ethnic minority and historically underserved populations. Medical clinicians and other healthcare providers are strategically positioned to engage vulnerable populations and promote quality physical activity participation as a preventive medicine strategy or treatment modality.

Learning Objectives:
1) Analyze the five basic components of fitness and physical exercise;
2) Critique the basic physical activity assessment methods for use in clinical and field settings;
3) Apply exercise risk stratification and appropriate exercise prescription protocols; and
4) Summarize opportunities to link patients to community physical activity and fitness resources.
